Open-air parking in three places

An open-air space is a marked place on a paved lot with nothing overhead. Three of the four places have it: the two Bloomington lots near I-494 and 34th Avenue South, the Highland Park lot on Davern Street and the Eagan lot on Lexington Avenue South. Open-air space starts from $15 a day in Eagan, from $17 a day in Bloomington and from $18 a day in Highland Park.

It fits most cars and most stays. The Bloomington and Eagan shuttles run through the night and come to your car. Highland Park tends to suit drivers from Saint Paul, Roseville or the east metro who leave from Terminal 1. The office works out which of the three adds the fewest minutes for you.

A roofed garage, or a ramp

A space under a roof keeps snow and summer sun off the car, and the Bloomington garage has one from $22 a day. The Highland Park ramp costs less, from $20 a day, but a roof there is likely rather than certain: three of its four levels have one, the lot picks the level when you pull in, and the top one is open.

It suits winter departures, when a car left outside for a week can come back under a drift, and hot July stays. It also suits anyone landing late who would rather drive off than scrape. Highland Park sits closer to Terminal 1; the Bloomington garage, to Terminal 2.

Say whether a roof matters more to you than the daily rate, and whether you lean toward ramp or garage.

Oversized vans, pickups and campers

An oversized space takes a vehicle too long or too tall for a standard marked place: a full-size van, a long-bed pickup, a camper. Highland Park keeps a separate open area for these, from $46 a day. In Eagan, the lot parks a longer vehicle across several spaces with notice, for an extra charge it sets.

It suits families in a big van, work crews flying out together, and anyone whose vehicle hangs past the painted lines. The Eagan shuttle buses carry skis and golf bags. Trailers are their own question: put one in the note, and the office asks the lot before anything is reserved.

Hotel lots with their own shuttle

from $13 a day, set to take in the lot's fees, sales tax added by the lot

A hotel lot is parking that a hotel near the airport sells without a room, in Bloomington or South St. Paul. Each hotel runs its own shuttle on a schedule, every 20 to 60 minutes, with a pause overnight. Rates start from $13 a day.

It suits longer stays and people who can plan around a fixed shuttle time. Some hotel shuttles stop only at Terminal 1, and the free light rail carries you on to Terminal 2. Some hotels set a minimum stay, and one in South St. Paul fetches you from your car on call.

What every reservation carries with it

Every reservation the office makes starts with a callback in a phone window: the lot's name and street address, its daily rate, the total for your dates, where its shuttle stops at your terminal's Ground Transport Center, and its rules on changes and late returns. The quote is free, and a no simply closes the request. After your yes, the lot takes over: you pay it the way it asks, ride its shuttle and follow its instructions on keys.

Choosing for short stays, long stays and snow

For 1 to 3 nights, the drive matters more than the kind of space: pick the lot that adds the fewest minutes on your way. In winter, a roof spares you a snowed-in windshield; in an open-air space, keep the brush inside the car, not in the trunk.
